What is art? Oh sure, you can offer up the classic line as misinterpreted by the Supreme Court of the United States – “I know it when I see it” – but in truth, what separates aesthetic from artifice? What makes something transcend its type, while the other confirms the cliches you hoped to avoid? Is it a matter of taste? Style? Substance? How about just plain beauty? They say its all in the eyes of the beholder, but you have to create some manner of benchmark before awarding a title like “art.” It just goes with such creative territory.

This is obviously what Sony is trying to do with its annual World Photography Awards. Now in its 10th year, the competition was created to allow individuals from around the world to show off their skill with a camera (or, in 2017, some kind of digital device). Both professionals and amateur participated, with the judges looking over 227,596 images from 183 countries. Last year, only 49 nations participated, so clearly, Sony’s profile is on the rise. Indeed, for the first time, there are participants from Armenia, Cuba, Iceland, and Saudi Arabia. The winners will be announced April 20th. Until then, take a look at some of the entries. They truly are works of art.
