Saroo Brierley, born Sheru Munshi Khan was adopted by an Australian couple after losing his mother. He was originally born in a central part of India that is quite rural.
Like many children in India, Saroo and his family were completely impoverished.
It was no help that his father left his mother for another woman, leaving her to fend for herself.
Forced to do what she could, Saroo’s mother would often leave her children for days to work, hauling rocks for less than a dollar a day.
Forced to beg for morsels, the children were separated one night while begging for food at the train station.
Waiting on the bench Saroo recalls falling asleep for a brief time, then waking up and not being able to find his brother. He assumed hi brother might be scavenging on the train, so he boarded.
The train was empty and so Saroo sat to relax and figure out his next move but he fell asleep on the train.
